Making Meal Time Easier for Busy Moms & Picky Eaters

Being a mom is HARD. Being a working mom is HARD. Being a working mom of a picky eater is EXTREMELY hard and incredibly frustrating.

Two weeks ago we had the girls’ 2 year and 4 year wellness appointments. I knew it was coming, but the pediatrician told us that Genny needs to stop drinking toddler formula. She has been a terrible eater (of table foods) her entire life so we never transitioned from formula to milk. Instead, a year ago, we transitioned from formula to toddler formula so that she would still be getting nutrients even if she wasn’t eating. She has become pretty dependent on it. In the last six months her weight percentile went from 50% to 90% which is a very big gain. So our doctor advised that once we finish our current stock of formula, we get rid of it for good. If Genny is hungry, she will eat. And if she loses some weight in the meantime it’s okay, but she needs to stop being dependent on the formula.

Right now I am working around sixty hours a week. We have a babysitter at the house in the morning and another in the afternoon. Trying to meal plan for Genny is so frustrating. I am not super trusting or confident in having someone else make her meals, so I usually prep something for her or leave easy instructions for meals in the air fryer. But most of the time she just won’t eat and when she does it’s always the same things.

Little Spoon recently launched their new line – Little Plates. These are pre-made meals that arrive frozen, sealed and on reusable (dishwasher safe!) plates. We were able to try these ahead of launch and they have been a lifesaver for me because it takes the worry out of meal prep and having to worry about whether or not things are being made correctly. I’m able to leave a plate for Genny and the sitter warms it up.

Little Plates are perfect for kids ages 1-7 and they have many different options, including dairy free, gluten free and vegetarian. I was impressed that they arrived in an insulated box with two large (reusable!) ice packs on the top and bottom. 

The meals can be reheated in the microwave or the oven. We personally do not use the microwave (but absolutely no judgement if you do!) and I didn’t want to preheat the entire oven, so I transferred to a tray and warmed these in my air fryer on the “REHEAT” setting and they were ready in minutes. I added a roll for my older daughter because she is a big eater, but for Genny I just served the plate meal, which included broccoli, turkey pesto meatballs and whole wheat spaghetti with marinara sauce. We are a Sicilian family so she was very happy with the pasta and I was happy because a) she ate! and b) I was able to offer her something new without spending hours in the kitchen and buying a bunch of ingredients that I may never use again.

Since everything is dishwasher safe clean up was a complete breeze! I loaded my dishwasher and was done for the night. We have a few more that we are excited to try – like chicken super nuggets with sweet potato carrot tots and broccoli & chicken potstickers with quinoa “fried rice” and edamame.
